Happy Thursday!
A team from The Blood-Horse was recently in Kentucky filming a feature about Zenyatta that will run as a Breeders’ Cup longform at Bloodhorse.com.
The piece will tell the story of Zenyatta’s career and connections, her charisma, and the fan following she maintains to this day. The Bloodhorse team went to Lane’s End to collect video footage to include in this special online feature and visited with Ziconic as well as 14Z. Meanwhile, their photographer in New York collected images of Cozmic One in training with John Shirreffs, which will also be included in the piece.
Here you can see a few photos of the team in action. Pictured above right is Multimedia Producer Scott Tracy and Online Features Editor Claire Novak in the paddock with Z Princess. Take a look at some of the behind-the-scenes footage below.
This piece is set to run on October 27, and we’ll remind everyone when it is released. We can’t wait to see it!
You can check out another recent longform feature they did on Arlington’s Richard Duchossois and the upcoming Arlington Million here.
Enjoy!

Thank you Team Z and LE for another great post. I love looking at Zenny and the princess. The video is very nice too.
I hope I don’t forget to watch the show in October so if someone here that has my email or FB please give me a pock to remind me. I would appreciate that very much.
Angel is doing much better from her fall last week. That medication that the vet gave her works so well. I did find some snacks for her that had no grain or gluten but they don’t agree with her belly either. I tried 2 times to give her a few and both times she got sick.
It is still so hard for me to believe that that tiny 3oz can of dog food did this to her. I guess I will be making rice and chicken the rest of her days.
It’s a rainy day here and I have been cleaning out my closets. I felt so good last weekend after doing my walk-in closet I started another one today. This is a much harder one to do. I have several boxes of paper work in there. I put them in there almost 10 years ago and just decided it’s time to go through them too. I started with what I thought was an easy one. A box of old check duplicates that I don’t have the account anymore. I really did not look at what they where from but the dates kept flashing in my face as I put them in the shredder. I would not think that would upset me but it brought back bad memories. The bank was the credit union from my former employer Macy’s. I though about the way I was treated by my boss after Brian died and the fact that she made sure I was let go in 2008 when 7000 people where terminated to cut cost. I opened the lid of box number 2 and saw a booklet that was coping with chemotherapy. That was when I quit. I came to the blog to look at the pictures again and read about Zenny to cheer myself up. It’s not really working today my face is raining too.
I need to keep at it though. I just took a break to spill my heart to my friends here. I know that so many people are much worse off and feel bad for even writing this but I need to get it out. Back to work I go.
Tomorrow is another day and it’s also a Cappers Day. TC I hope we win again!
I have not studied my pp’s yet like I know what I am doing anyway… Maybe I will do that instead of box number 2. Happy Capping everyone

Sue. Bad memories can come back so vividly that we can feel just as bad now as we did then. Don’t let this babe continue to control or inflict any misery on your life. Forgive and take the high road. Fate always repays in kind. Have some fun instead on a Saturday. No one ever got a Nobel Prize for tidy closets. Hope that you and Angel both feel really good soon.

I wanna remember that one, Max, thanks! “No one ever got a Nobel Prize for tidy closets.” You said it! That will probably be appropriate as an epitaph, someday. The memories that haunt closets, often best forgotten.

Hi Sue, I can only ditto what others have said. You know you can always let it out in this place. The rain and gloominess will fade and the sun will shine again…life is good.

Hope all the cappers get on the board this week-end. Good luck to all.

Glad to hear Angel is doing better. I guess she’s not ready for treats yet. Maybe it will take a while for her tummy to recover fully. Sorry you are remembering sad times in your life. Hi Sue
Sending lots of love and hope you and Angel feel better soon. Agree with Max and hope you go out and do something nice for yourself or have a cuppa with a friend.
I wonder if Angel may like some chicken in cubes for a treat(can freeze).
My dog Tully loves sardines in water(drained) but don’t want to suggest something that may upset Angel’s tummy. You know best, take bones out and try the tiniest bit when she starts to feel better if you wish.

Dear Sheena
Just saw Deri and Gwynant in the nest a few minutes ago-looking great.
I reread about Blue 80 and the Glaslyn Osprey Project. They must be so happy to hear about their chick back in the UK . I saw the video again and smiled when Deri inched over and spread her wings to scare the intruder off the perch.Monty was a good Dad and helped from the nest.Great info on the site, thanks.
Have trouble keeping up with one blog and now back to daily routine and off the take Ash out for a good walk and graze. Tully had fun yesterday on a hike on the North Shore-she loved bushwacking and went into any stream she could find. The view from the top was so pretty-ocean and mountains.
Love to you and yours,

Dan fans. The King of the Chestnuts may be heading to Woodbine for his comeback race. Nice track, grade 1 stakes, big payout and it’s a win and you’re in to the Breeders’ Cup. Woodbine provided female caregivers to Dan last year, and he seemed to like them. It’s all good! Go for it, Danny.

Stevens walking after surgery
Bloodhorse.com August 16, 2014
Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens was seated on a bench at Del Mar near the stable area racing office the morning of Aug. 15. Attired in a T-shirt and shorts, the right knee that he had surgically replaced exactly three weeks ago was on display for all to see.
“I’m no different than anyone else. They said the first two weeks [after surgery] would be hell, and they were,” Stevens said. “But I’ve gotten rid of my cane, I’m walking and driving again, and that’s the main thing.”
Stevens, 51, has expressed intentions to ride again following rehabilitation, which would be an achievement believed to be without precedent in racing.

‘He Lied Like Nobody’s Business’: A Racing Con Man and His Trail of Deception
by Ray Paulick Paulick Report 08.11.2014
Five months ago, Jonathan Pippin was living large. A small-time Ohio grifter who had convinced a handful of Twitter followers to invest in horses he didn’t own, Pippin had been working for months at hooking a bigger fish, one of the largest in all of horse racing. And so that’s how he found himself as a guest in the Southern California home of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and wife Jill on one of the most important racing weekends of the Santa Anita Park winter meeting, Big ‘Cap day on March 8.
How Pippin traveled from a world of bottom-level claimers at Thistledown and Mountaineer Park to the Santa Anita Handicap winner’s circle alongside Game On Dude and American racing’s most famous trainer is a tale of deceit, opportunism and unmitigated gall. It’s a bewildering story of social media gone wrong, fake email accounts, online bullying, secretly recorded tapes and voice changing machines. Those who crossed Pippin’s path of deceit included a handful of eager young horseplayers wanting to own a piece of a racehorse, Bob and Jill Baffert, prominent horse owner Maggi Moss, New York Times turf writer Joe Drape, racing publicist Kelly Wietsma, California Horse Racing Board Equine Medical Director Dr. Rick Arthur, and this writer, among others.

Thrilled with the article about Coz and John’s comments were so wonderful. I try to remember that Coz can’t be just like Mom because he is a colt. I just want him to be as happy and content as she was during her racing career. I missed Mr. Commons race yesterday because of a Drs. appt. but I made Brother #3 promise to watch it. His description wasn’t very informative but is was pretty funny. He couldn’t understand why the horse just “hung around at the back and waited until the last minute to try and catch up” and he couldn’t really tell one horse from the other at the wire. I’ve been worried about Mr. Commons and have been afraid to find out. Plus, I have really enjoyed the ospreys. Exposure to new interests is one thing I really love about coming here.

Dear Debbie. All is peaceful on the Dyfi for the night. It’s 10.40pm over here. It’s strange for me to see the nest empty at night after all the egg-laying,incubation and fledging is over. They’ve both grown to be such fine birds and it speaks volumes for the volunteers on their 24hr watch at all UK sites especially Glaslyn. It is sad that only 30% of youngsters make it back to the UK.I hope you’ve had a great day with Ash ,it sounded as if you and Tully thoroughly enjoyed yourselves yesterday.Such a beautiful part of the world.Love and hugs Sheena.

@BGG–thanks for the update on Gary S. He is correct. Knee replacement has to be the roughest surgery ever. I wasn’t allowed to drive until my checkup at 4 weeks, so he’s doing great. I cant’ even imagine having both done at once, though I have friends who have done it. Hugs.
zfansandy
Appreciate the update TeamZ, I desperately needed a Z fix.
One thing I’ve noticed in all the updates is that our Queen doesn’t seem as doting over 14Z as she was with the older ones. I’m also worried that she took a year off from breeding while she’s in her prime for it (I know everyone else is glad for her rest). Any comments from those more educated is appreciated. She looks slow and not happy in the vid. I love you my Queen forever and ever.XOXOXOXO. Take care.
Can’t wait for the Bloodhorse article.
Z13Rulz
To hopefully help set your mind to ease a little.
First, at this stage of development it’s normal and even positive behavior that Zenyatta is no longer doting on 14Z and that 14Z is more independent of her mother. Remember in a month if not less 14Z will be weaned and the behavior we’re seeing now is the natural ramp up to that process.
Go back and look at earlier pictures when 14Z was much younger and you’ll see that she is as close to Zenyatta’s side as CoZ or Ziconic were at that same age. Look at the first picture after 14Z was born and you can see the same love and wonder in Zenyatta’s eyes as you saw with CoZ and Ziconic. They’re just now to the point where it’s time for 14Z to be her own young lady and both of them are expressing this natural, independent progression.
Second, it’s a hot August morning! Zenyatta is living the life of a leisurely lady these days, she doesn’t have to hurry anywhere! Beyond that she’s a smart, kind mare who has no reason to be dragging her handler around. She’s in the lead, she has Z14 right beside her and she knows the ‘routine’, it’s time to slow down and enjoy life.

Sheena. My friend is in the proverbial dog house over that cat food. Wife is furious. She’s also upset about the peaches because she thinks that they should be hand pitted before the horse eats them. I tend to agree. You have to be concerned always about the possibility of colic with horses. I’m waiting to hear that his clothes have been thrown from a second storey window. He can however camp out in his horse barns.
The ferals however are usually well fed on other cat food which is also store bought. They have a good deal there. They sneak into the barns and find beds in the hay. There are about twenty of them. They all have names, but run free.
Will check for video of gray race.

Home happy and filthy.Ash had a great time and then rolled and spent time in the big paddock out front before he went into the barn.I took the rake… and groomed him and now he is clean and I am a sight-smile.He was grooming my back as I groomed him and when I find his favourite spots to scratch his neck sticks out about a meter!
It is so sad that only 30% of the chicks make it back.I started watching so late and am already attatched to them,it must be very hard for you after knowing them so well. Sheena. Hardest Core has an inspiring story. His is a victory for little guys everywhere. Had to smile about him getting back to his feed tub within two days of that serious surgery. Sounds like Dan. These guys love their food. Hardest Core is also a nice looking horse. Did you notice that his win was mostly from a hand ride? Young Joe was using the whip on Magician.

Hi all, no one including myself has attempted to contact Becky who has Sir after how angry she has been. I picture Sir all the time, think of him every day and just send prayers his way. I guess the few of us are hoping things will settle down and I was told that Brenda, who came into our program about a month before Sir left to his new home, is suppose to be Becky’s contact person as she had followed the trailer holding Sir and met Becky. She too is holding back contacting.

Have been off for a bit, getting up close and personal with my little girl. Gave her a good grooming Friday, and yesterday replaced her grotty cotton rug with a nice clean new one, and of course the cosy winter rug. It was just incredible to lead her from the paddock to the stable and back – and she was very happy to get a huge hug. I think she’s slowly realising that her time as a racehorse is just a memory. Now here are some photos of my little girl:

Dear Judy:
Forgot to tell you. Went to the local track on Friday afternoon. A brown gelding called Hudson County was in the 1400 Maiden – came in third. Was an interesting race, apart from Hudson running, in that the winner tossed the jock behind the barrier, jumped a fence was rounded up by the clerk and declared fit to run, and in fact took out the race. Would have been something of a shock to the owners I think. But Hudson County was a nice looking fellow, with a very kind strapper. This Hudson is a Danewin from Riverbend, and a 3 year old. Hugs, KathyR.

We never really lose anyone. If they were ever a part of our lives, they are always a part of our lives. The important thing is not to regret what has gone before but to take from it the lesson, the experience that was in it for us. Life is a two-way street, not always sunshine and flowers but a few clouds, a few tears, go with it. It is a complex mixture of many things we are supposed to glean from it. We cannot park by what went wrong, nor can we linger forever by something we might have done right, It is a progressive, moving time filled with new experiences, memories both good and not so good, and many promising hours. It is possible to put our emotions aside and remember joy. But above all, the best is yet to be.
The Great Spirit placed me here…to take good care of the ground and to do each other no harm.
