Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is enjoying the first day of summer. Zenyatta and her two colts certainly are! Alys sent along some photos from her last visit to Zenyatta’s paddock. It’s the perfect way to kick off the weekend!
The Zenyatta Shop also has a small update this week: The “Zenyatta & Colt, April 2, 2013” print is now available in 8″ x 10″ and 11″ x 14″ sizes.
To top it off, here’s a quick video of 13Z being cheeky with his buddy and Alys’ phone…
Enjoy!

Exact quote reads:
“Game On Dude (and losing the mount on him) did hurt. It kind of stung. I’d been fired and hired my whole career and I think I’ve been pretty good at dealing with all of it – but that one hurt. I held that pain with me and until I took those courses and realized that I’m more grateful for Game On Dude. Whatever choices were made were just choices and had nothing to do with me as a jockey. I’m so happy now that I had that opportunity and I’m looking forward to another opportunity like it. I just realized there were so many other great horses out there that I’ve ridden and that horse racing, for me, wasn’t just about Game On Dude. It was a beautiful moment and we’ll leave it at that. So, I’ve been able to let go of that pain.”

DianaS
Keta how convenient, forgetting to post the paragraph before the quote
you posted.
Denial is a very powerful defense mechanism and you use it quite well:
“When I was away, I took two courses that were self-reflective and that
help you learn about yourself and how to become a powerful person
in the universe. So, I really reflected on some of the decisions I made,
where I wanted to be in my life and what I wanted to do with my life.
And I realized that I’m not really yet ready to leave racing.”
Game on Dude ( and losing the mount on him) did hurt. It kind of stung.
I’d been fired and hired my whole career and I think I’ve been pretty good
at dealing with all of it – but that one hurt. I held that pain with me until
I took those courses and realized that I’m more grateful for Game On Dude.
Whatever choices were made were just choices and had nothing to do with me as a jockey.”
Paraphrased; The two courses she took were on self-esteem building,
she reflected and realized that she took the situation with being taken
off GOD personally and through raising her self-esteem through the
courses was able to realize that it was not her it was just a fact and that was
that.
Perhaps these courses are for you, too.

Wise Dan becomes first horse to win Firecracker twice
By Sports Network The Miami Herald Posted on Saturday, 06.29.13
Champion thoroughbred Wise Dan continued his quest for a second straight Horse of the Year honor with a second career victory in the $150,000 Firecracker Handicap at Churchill Downs Saturday night.
Trained by Charles LoPresti and ridden by John Velazquez, Wise Dan recorded his second win in the mile turf stakes to become the only horse to win the race twice, having first won two years ago.
The original eight-horse field was reduced to five with three scratches.

Pati-So tired of college shopping
I loves me some Wise Dan!! He’s so handsome! I just wish that I can see him before he retires. This was quite a race. Calvin BoRAIL would have been proud of that race by the Dan’s pilot. What a gutsy gutsy gelding.
Max
Pati. Not certain where Dan goes next, maybe Saratoga? He might be at Woodbine again in September for the Woodbine Mile. Heard that he likes the trip to Toronto and it’s a win and you’re in for the Breeders’ Cup. Hope that you get to see him somewhere. He’s the top turf miler in the world. Now we know that he runs on water too. Lightning bolts? No problem for our Dan. Grand ole chestnut.
Terry Crow
Wise Dan’s connections want to get him a Grade 1 win on the dirt, so he will probably seek the best spot he can find for that to happen.
shirleeinindy
Pati, Wise Dan had the dreaded Johnny V up. I say dreaded because he doesn’t ride my favorites very often and he almost always beats them when he rides against them. A great jockey, but even greater when he rides on of my favs.
Pati-So tired of college shopping
I know how you feel. I have that issue with Irad Ortiz Jr. When he rides my favorites, I always do well. When he doesn’t, he always beats me. Even if his horse doesn’t win, they always finish in front of mine. -_-
Terry Crow
Agree with you, shirlee. Check on his ride on Union Rags in the 2012 Belmont.
Max
TC. Agree with you about the dirt race. Woodbine is turf and may be on the cards for the entry to the Breeders’ Cup and the $1 million prize money. It also draws Euros. It’s good for the resume for Dan to beat them yet again before the Breeders’ Cup. Dan is the top racer in the world. Who else could have done what he has done over so many surfaces? He’s magnificient.
Terry Crow
Max-Agree with you about Wise Dan. How can one not be a fan of this magnificent horse?
casey
It was a game effort by the Dan, and carrying the weight with those conditions… Just saw that Dude will be carrying 128 next Saturday in the final Hollywood Gold Cup!…I hope to be there, but may be on call because of the holiday weekend.
@Trina Nagele- are you going to make it down for the Cup? I know the SD crew will be coming up, as will the high desert folks… I hope I get to see you, sweet Trina!!! <3
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Thank you for asking, Casey–yes, I’ll see you there!
shirleeinindy
My sweet Lea ran second to Dan. No shame in that. Of course, Dan was carrying so much more weight than all the others. That is why I don’t care for the handicapped races. I know all the reasoning behind them, but still hate to see these horses carrying the weight.
Max
Agree.

Thanks for posting this Max! It was great to see Moosie running (and jumping!). Was that SNOW along the sides of the track??? Brrrrr! So if I’ve interpreted the tweets correctly, Moosie is now saying that he might go back to jumping after his vacation (ref to meeting up with Sprinter Sacre)?
Max
Sandy. As far as we know, Moosie will go back to jumping, although he’s entered to race on the flat at the Curragh in September. Moosie likes to keep us guessing. As to the snow, Sheena mentioned that there was a lot of snow in the UK this winter.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
He really is multi-talented. I wouldn’t have know that the Curragh is either a flat track or a race ON a flat track. As you said, I’m sure he will keep us guessing on many counts :-)
Max
Sandy. The Curraugh is the premier flat race course for TBs in County Kildare, Ireland. They’ve been racing there since 1727. The name comes from the Irish word for racetrack and the course is shaped like a horse shoe. Racing is right handed. All of the group 1 races such as the Irish Guineas and the Irish St. Leger are held at The Curraugh.

Churchill Downs: Wise Dan has options after Firecracker win
By Marty McGee Daily Racing Form 06/30/2013 12:58PM
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Wise Dan came out of his adventurous triumph in the Grade 2 Firecracker Handicap on Saturday night at Churchill Downs “without a scratch,” according to Charlie LoPresti, who kept breathing deep sighs of relief in the race’s aftermath.
LoPresti admitted to having some “What have I done?” moments before and during the Firecracker, which was run amid heavy rain. Wise Dan, carrying 128 pounds, was blocked in traffic much of the way, then brushed the inside hedge and bobbled noticeably down the stretch en route to a two-length victory, his seventh in a row. John Velazquez was aboard Wise Dan, the 1-5 favorite in a field of five.
http://www.drf.com/news/churchill-downs-wise-dan-has-options-after-firecracker-win
Excerpt from article: LoPresti said Wise Dan, the 2012 Horse of the Year, will head to Saratoga in about two weeks. Although either or both of the main turf fixtures, the Aug. 10 Fourstardave and the Aug. 31 Bernard Baruch, are more likely, LoPresti would not rule out either of the two top dirt races for older horses, the Aug. 3 Whitney and the Aug. 31 Woodward.

To fans of HOVIS–I found this on Wikipedia about the name Hovis, first used for the bread which, as Sheena said, dates back to the 19th century:
“The name was coined in 1890 by London student Herbert Grime in a national competition set by S. Fitton & Sons Ltd to find a trading name for their patent flour which was rich in wheat germ. Grime won £25 when he coined the word from the Latin phrase hominis vis – ‘the strength of man’.”
High hoof, Sheena and Max, for keeping us in touch with HOVIS the horse and his Diary.

Dear Trina:
Suits him. Thank you. Hugs, JB
Max
Trina. Thanks for this very interesting info about the origins of hovis. In 1890, £25 was a fortune. I love that cheeky Clydesdale, but Sheena found him for us all. I only post the link to his diary. When I post, I consider that I am doing it on behalf of Sheena. She discovered him, and she knows much more about UK racing and current events there than I do.

Game On Dude Assigned 127 Pounds for Gold Cup
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Sunday, June 30, 2013 6:25 PM
Defending champion Game On Dude drew top weight of 127 pounds for the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) July 6.
At 1 1/4 miles over Cushion Track, the 74th Gold Cup will be run Saturday for the final time at Betfair Hollywood Park. The track’s signature race is part of a stakes doubleheader. The supporting feature is the $150,000 Royal Heroine Mile (gr. IIT) for fillies and mares on turf.
Owned by a partnership that includes Joe Torre’s Diamond Pride, Lanni Family Trust, Ernie Moody’s Mercedes Stable, and Bernie Schiappa and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Game On Dude will try to become the third horse to win the Gold Cup more than once. Native Diver (1965-1967) and Lava Man (2005-2007) were three-time winners.

Hard to believe that the race won by Seabiscuit in 1938 will be no more.
Pati-So tired of college shopping
I hope it finds a new home somewhere, either Del Mar or Santa Anita. It would be a shame to lose a race with so much tradition. Now that everyone has longer race dates, maybe they’ll find a new day for it at one of the other tracks.
Terry Crow
Pati-It would be nice if either Santa Anita or Del Mar could name one of it’s stake races the Gold Cup and keep its history intact. California tracks are not known for their innovation, however. and, the two remaining entities would have to agree on which one would have the race. Perhaps they could trade off on a yearly basis.

Ramsey: ‘Repole’s Reign Is Getting Ready To Come To a Screeching Halt’
by Press Release | 06.30.2013 | 4:28pm
Owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey entered closing day of the Spring Meet at Churchill Downs with a record 30 wins and will collect their record 19th owners’ title at the Louisville racetrack. The Nicholasville, Ky. couple now have set their sights on collecting their third leading-owners title at Saratoga.
“You can tell them to look out at Saratoga,” Ken Ramsey said. “It’s the 150th anniversary and I’m bringing enough horses up there to win the owners’ title. I know I’m going to have some competition up there, but I think you might be talking to the leading owner at Saratoga for the 150th anniversary meet.”
The Ramseys won the owners title at Saratoga in 2008 and ’09, but Mike Repole’s Repole Stable took home the trophy in ’10-12.
