Happy Friday!
How did you spend Father’s Day? We went to Lane’s End to celebrate with Zenyatta, and that was just the start of an exciting week…
12Z is getting so big, and we just had a blast hanging out with him and his mom.
Our next stop was California, where we stopped in to see Z’s little sister Eblouissante. We brought along Baby Z’s first halter, and Auntie Eblouissante got a kick out of it!
And then the most exciting news of all came this morning: Zenyatta is officially 60 days in foal to Tapit!
We also debuted our new column, Ask The Experts, earlier this week. Recently we invited all of you to submit questions about Zenyatta, her colt, and life at Lane’s End. Our inbox was flooded with hundreds of questions from all over the world.
We are so touched by the number of people Zenyatta has reached–-we love hearing from you! We also want to thank the ever generous people at Lane’s End Farm for agreeing to participate in this column, and for regularly providing photos for us to share with all of you.
If you missed your chance to send in a question, we will inviting another round of submissions in the future. Keep your eyes open!
Have a great weekend!

Great start to the weekend to see those delightful photos of the Mr and Mrs Moss with all the gang! I’ve said before, but I’ll repeat, it is just fantastic the way Team Z share her with people all over the world – and even more so now that she has become a Mum. So many, many thanks to Mr and Mrs Moss, and all the folk at Lane’s End! (And a safe journey to Nelly at Ascot!)

A Birthday Poem for Kathy Baldwin in SoCal
(June 23, 2012)
Dearest Kathy Baldwin,
Today
On your own special day,
I bet you’ll be
Eager to see
What that racing star,
The Australian mare Black Caviar,
Will do
In the Diamond Jubilee
At England’s Royal Ascot.
At 16 hands 2
She measures like Secretariat,
And, as yet undefeated, she,
In salmon silks
With black polka dots,
Is going for win
TWENTY-TWO straight–
Wow, that’s a LOT!
And to think twenty of them
Have been
‘Gainst the boys!
She’s truly today without ilk–
They say to date
She with the opposition
Just toys—
For her, they’re no real competition!
In addition,
She’s so determined to win
That she most often comes in
Under a simple hand ride
As she with her long smooth stride
To the finish does glide.
For this renamed edition
Of the six furlong Golden Jubilee,
She seems to be
In superb condition,
And when Luke Nolan, her jockey,
Turns the ignition,
Every fan does expect
A brilliant race rendition.
She’s a mare of great strength–
Her average win
Is by more than three lengths.
She’s so strong
That for a furlong
She’s been clocked to date
At 44.8
Miles per hour–
Mercy me, what power!
No wonder Black Caviar
Does rate
As the world’s best sprinter by far!
Meanwhile, back
In the good ol’ US of A,
Dearest Kathy Baldwin,
Though at Del Mar,
Your closest track,
It’s dark,
There’ll be racing at Hollywood Park.
We’re told it’s your favorite course,
And it’s still not too far–
Will you maybe there go?
And if so,
Do you look forward to placing a bet?
Whether yes or no,
We want to say
We hope your domestic horses,
And internationally, Black Caviar,
Will all today spark–
May they come home to win,
Giving you a big grin
And a wonderful day
You’ll never forget!
And in closing may
I also say
We here together come
On the great Zenyatta’s site
And it wouldn’t seem right
If we did fail
Our respect to the Queen to pay,
And so to her I wish to convey
That she, who did the classic distance run,
Will FOREVER be our Number One!
Happy birthday, Kathy, and many, many happy returns!

Thank you so much for the update and sharing those beautiful pictures. Everyone look great and Baby Z is so adorable. Wow! He’s growing like a weed and look at those ears. I am looking forward to see Ebby’s first race. Please continue to keep us informed.

As a fan of Queen Z, I also support the other queens of our sport. And I have been waiting for year for the undefeated Black Caviar to run at Royal Ascot. And she’s running in the Diamond Jubilee Race this morning (EST). What a trip, the Aussie Queen running in a race renamed for the Queen’s 60th year as a monarch. You go Queen Nelly (her stable name).
And she swims every day and smiles when she is swimming. She is the fastest sprinter in the world and has been UNDEFEATED in 21 races.
Please send a high hoof out to Black Caviar, aka The Wonder From Down Under.
Royal Ascot is live on line through BBC, and is also on HRTV and TVG.

ATTENTION CANADIAN ZSTERS: It looks like Woodbine Race Track will be closing because it has been denied slot machine revenue (short version of the story). That means that hundreds of people will lose jobs and so many horses will be stranded. Will they be adopted, retrained, sent to slaughter? This is when I wish Equi-Army-NDO had a Canadian branch to start looking into this and finding options. It doesn’t.
So if you live in Canada, would you please start to look into the Woodbine story and find out what will be happening to the horses? Please keep us posted. We are following the story here but you have more access to Canadian press stories.
Equi-Army-NDO is very worried about this kind of situation, whether in Canada or the USA-where will these horses go?

A very sad thing Barabra.
Sue Fredrick Co-P WI Chapt.
Barb,
Why would they deny anything that would keep the track open? How terrible! I had heard they were closing a track in Fort Erie too. Where will all these TBS race, and what will happen to them? So sad.
Max
Barb. Nothing has been decided about this yet. It is so far political warfare between the owners of the track and the provincial (state) government. Threatening to end an iconic race which is associated with the Queen during her Jubilee year is a good pressure move on a minority government that has to rely on the opposition to continue governing. They are operating in a parliamentary system so that the government can fall without opposition support. I do not know how the opposition parties line up on this, but would think that no one wants to see any lost jobs or horses racing elsewhere. However it is worth watching. Maybe people in Ontario should contact their MPPs and voice an opinion?

These new pictures are so great. I had wondered aloud here if Mr. and Mrs. Moss would visit Zenyatta and 12Z for Fathers’ Day and, now we know. Thank you so much Lane’s End and Team Z for keeping us updated on the two of them.
I’m not at all surprised that IHA has been sold as his owner said right around IHA’s retirement that he is not into breeding. He likes the racing part of horse racing. (Sounds a little like the Blind Luck scenario last year.) I can cut him some slack for selling IHA, but I am so disappointed he is leaving the USA. I imagine a lot of owners of mares are even more disappointed. I don’t think they will ship their mares to Japan to be bred. Maybe his daddy, Flower Alley or his grandpa, Arch will be seeing those mares. It’s just that he’s OUR champion and should live here regardless of who can line the pockets with the most gold. I think the owner has lost a lot of respect with the racing public, for sure, and possibly with those more involved in the racing business.
On a happier note, HOOFRAY, Zenyatta has been confirmed to be 60 days in foal!! Would love a dark gray baby.
It’s almost a half hour until Black Caviar’s race. Best of luck to her and her connections and safety for all.
Everyone, enjoy the weekend.

Dear Max,
Thanks for finding the video.
What a misjudge on jockey’s part.
Misjudged competition, energy use on
Soft turf and uphill stretch. Just glad
She won. He is an honest guy and
Admitted jockey issues.

Good thing she won or the jockey would never be able to return to Australia. There is a rumor that Black Caviar may be retired.

A Poem for Black Caviar, aka Nelly
(June 23, 2012)
We here in the States
Are used to saying “Whoa, Nelly,”
But today as we watched on the telly,
We all did yell
“GO, Nelly”!
And she WON race twenty-two,
Her twelfth graded stakes,
But WHAT did Luke Nolan do?!
Trina Nagele in So Cal
For HIM,
They’re talking ’bout the “blunder
From down under!”
They say he almost cost her the win…
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Unfortunately he rode her like he did in
Australia, she usually coasts in for the win,
Not realizing his tank was almost empty.
He had never riddled her on soft turf or
An up hill stretch, which I am sure is brutal.
The Euros save a lot in the tank for the end
Of the race and jockey did not do that, but
No experience on how much he needed or what
He would use???

Congrats to Nelly…..but her Luke seems to misjudged the finish and quit riding …shades of Shoemaker ….but Nelly did it anyhow for #22…GIRL POWER
…..
Trainer worried she might not be 100%….talking about retirement
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
He did not quit riding, he thought he had more
In the tank and she would have crused into home.
He used up too much horse not being familiar
With the how much energy she would use on the
Soft turf and the uphill stretch drive.
Zenyen
If you watch the replay he did quit riding with his hands. He had to ask her to rebreak and luckily she had the turn of foot to get a quick jump in or she would have been beat.

It’s all in the hands, it’s all in the hands baby.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
The point is she always coasts into the win
The last 50 yards so he quit the hand ride at that point.
She did not coast as the tank was almost empty.
Used too much horse during the race and had minimal
Left for uphill stretch run.
Poor judgement as Ascot is not like Aussie tracks.
Ann
Gotcha Sign! I just love saying that phrase..it’s all in the hands. An old pal from the track use to say it ALL the time and I was remembering him.

Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
The British analyst on TVG had a field day bashing Luke. He said it was like Mikey’s ride in the BC. Too cocky, too arrogant. Well I say I disagree to you sir! This was his first time aboard her on a surface which she clearly didn’t favor. She was being ridden and she was feeling the whip on her shoulder for the first time. But she won! And that’s what a champion does, fights to the end, and never gives up. I did like how they discussed OUR Queen and how alike the two World Greats were. Not a fan of the bashing, as jockeys are humans too, but good on you Nelly!!! Just goes to show, the Greats make everything and everyone look good.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Bottom like is Black Cavier was prepared without
A cocky jockey, she ran on a soft deep turf that
Takes a lot out of a horse and ending on an uphill
Stretch is brutal for those horses not accustom to it,
Which she was not and for the first time in her life
She met horses who were very close to her match.
The Euro turf courses are brutal that is why soundness
And stamina are bred into the Euro TB.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
In addition, Zenny never met any very challenging
Competition until the BCC. If she won only by
A short margin it was her doing. She tested her
Ability to the max and ran lazy until a crucial time
And then poured it on.
The track itself was Black Cavier’s biggest issue
And Zenny did not have that.
There is no comparison between Zenny and Black
Cavier other than being female number of wins. They are apples
And oranges .
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Black Cavier’s jockey admittedly misjudged
The amount if horse he needed to make that
Up hill stretch drive. Don’t think he ever ran that
Course before.
Mike could not change that it took Zenny until the
First Churchill turn for her to realize she was even
In a race. She was confused by the track, did not like
It, and confused by the dark, she did not race in
The dark , and did not realize the boys too off so
Fast. She was not Silky Sullivan coming from behind
By 40 lengths to win.
Both BC and Zenny are very special champions and
The Brits have no room to criticize.
Max
Sign. Interesting analysis. I was very happy to see Nelly get her win. 22 sprint wins is an incredible record.
I was also impressed by the second placed US owned horse, Moonlight Cloud. She is trained by Freddie Head. We will have to watch her in future.
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
I heard on FB and Twitter that Moonlight Cloud would be trying the turf again in the BC. Wouldn’t that be something if that was true?
Max
Pati. It would be wonderful to see MC in the Breeders’ Cup. Freddie Head also trained the great Goldikova.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Me too Max.
Those Euro TB save everything for the end
Due to those insulating hills and dales and how
Very brutal an up hill stretch.
BC is truely a champion and proved it !!!!
Wonderful wonderful horse. Wonder if they
Will take her Beau back to Saloon back to
Austrailia. A little tongue and cheek, rich girl
does not go for the big money.
Max
Sign. According to the article which Ann posted, Nelly first sang out to Saloon. She knows who she likes as a friend and does not wait for any arranged introductions. Saloon soon returned the love calls. As Dottie would say, too cute!
You are right about the Euro turf courses. They are very tough. They call them flat but they are anything but flat. They are also not all straight.

Dear Max, Pati, Sign and Z Fans:
Would be great if Moonlight Cloud comes to the BC.
Think Black Caviar is a very special mare and does have a lot in common with Z when it comes to heart, courage and never quitting. What Z did in the 2010 BC Classic is something we will never see another horse do in our lifetime. She didn’t even get into the race until at least half way through and to finish like she did was just magnificent. Hugs, JB

Judy B. Z was superb in 2010 BCC. I have never been as impressed by sheer racing courage than that effort. It overshadowed the winner. Incredible.

That article, Mr. Redham said that any Rational Person would have gone to the Big Red Offer.
Mr Redham you are sadly wrong about That. Some of us have love in our Hearts and Money is not our Priority. Some of us would have the good Inteligence to do the Right Thing for the horse and those that love him.

The thing about him leaving is that we will probably never see him again . Well, not in this life anyway . Unless we travel to Japan

It’s as if these people have to justify their decisions. Any “rational” person. I don’t think so. He and Mr. O’Neill made a great deal of money off this beautiful animal. It makes me sick. I do not like racing….I love horses. And the Mosses have made me believe there are owners who love their animals.

In tribute to all the horses who have been running at Acot this week, but especially for Frankel and Black Caviar, I thought we might like to recall these lyrics from My Fair Lady.
Ascot Gavotte
(Written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe)
Every duke and earl and peer is here,
Everyone who should be here is here,
What a smashing, positively dashing spectacle–
The Ascot opening day!
At the gate are all the horses
Waiting for the cue to fly away,
What a gripping, absolutely ripping
Moment at the Ascot opening day!
Pulses rushing, faces flushing,
Heartbeats speed up, I have never been so keyed up,
Any second now they’ll begin to run.
Hark, a bell is ringing, they are springing forward, look, it has begun!
What a frenzied moment that was!
Didn’t they maintain an exhausting pace?
‘Twas a thrilling, absolutely chilling
Running of the Ascot opening race!

Jockey blunder nearly costs Black Caviar as Aussie superstar holds on to win at Royal Ascot in photo-finish
By Sportsmail Reporter
PUBLISHED: 09:47 EST, 23 June 2012 | UPDATED: 11:08 EST, 23 June 2012
.Black Caviar preserved her astounding unbeaten record with a narrow triumph in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The Australian sprinting sensation secured her 22nd consecutive victory with a dramatic head defeat of Moonlight Cloud
It was a remarkable finish, however, as regular jockey Luke Nolen, who had looked in supreme control from the outset, appeared to ease down his mount close to the line.
The 1-6 favourite still held on for a famous victory after a short wait for the photo-finish.
Peter Moody’s supermare has spiked the British racing public’s imagination since touching down at Heathrow two weeks ago, and for much of the six-furlong contest everything appeared to be running exceedingly smoothly.
Black Caviar raced in third as soon as the gates opened as Soul and Bogart cut out the running. Nolen’s companion was never off the bridle at that stage, and glided to the front just outside the final furlong.
To the naked eye, though, it felt as though Nolen was guilty of complacency as he fleetingly appeared to stop riding.
Victory in the Diamond Jubilee – her first start outside of Australia – also took her career earnings to just short of £4million.
Affectionately nicknamed ‘Nelly’ at her stables in Caulfield, Victoria, Black Caviar has been sent off the odds-on favourite in every one of her races since she won on debut at Flemington in April, 2009.
Yet despite her remarkable winning streak, she remains the second-highest-rated thoroughbred in the world behind Frankel, the brilliant winner of the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on Tuesday.
And while Black Caviar has been defeating good horses in her homeland – she has brushed aside three-times Group One scorer Hay List five times, for instance – this assignment was considered by most to be the sternest examination of her talents.
Happily for racing purists and romanticists alike, she answered every call – even though her jockey ensured a nerve-jangling finale.
A sheepish Nolen accepted he had misjudged his challenge at the line.
He said: ‘I underestimated the testing track of Ascot
‘She’d had enough and that big engine throttled right down.
‘It’s unfortunate, because we’re going to talk more about my brain failure than the horse’s fantastic effort.
‘We won, but it may have overshadowed what was a fantastic effort by the horse. We got away with it.’
Moody refused to condemn Nolen, and instead revelled in the adulation of Black Caviar winning yet another race.
He said: ‘You’ve only got to win by a quarter of an inch – we got the job done.
‘We never expect dominance – we never ask her for dominance – we are extremely proud of her.
‘I’m an extremely proud Aussie. It’s very fitting that it’s with a horse like this.’
Freddie Head, trainer of Moonlight Cloud, said: ‘One more stride and we would have won.
‘I think we will now head for the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville, and I don’t think we will return here for the July Cup (at Newmarket).
‘I love this filly, she is a darling and she will make a lovely broodmare one day.’
Her rider Thierry Jarnet said: ‘She was superb, she ran so well and was gaining and gaining.’
Fellow French trainer Henri-Alex Pantall was also thrilled with the effort of the unheralded Restiadargent, a 40-1 chance.
He said: ‘I am so happy with this filly because I would have settled for coming fourth or fifth, so this is a bonus.
