Loved watching Harry’s announcement in front of the stables.

He turns round when finishing to say thanks to all the horses!

After taking a day or to digest what happened at the derby, I believe that the DQ of Max Sec was probably the best decision. However, after reading many of the trainers comments that it was the right call, I find I would have to ask those same trainers, if it were your horse would you readily agree?
Sometimes in my opinion mine alone, that if it had been another well known trainer would there have been a change? Flatten Prat admitted that his horse was probably not impacted, but did he seize an opportunity?
Why didn’t the stewards wait 23 minutes to decide? It did not take that long to DQ Jaywalk for her interference that caused Positive Spirit to go down in the Oaks the day before.
Sorry for this, but Zenyatta brought me back to the sport, now I am seriously considering taking another long break if not for good.
I also posted a link where the West’s are considering leaving the sport. Headline says “threatens” but it does not read that way to me.

Sorry, that should read why did the stewards take 23 minutes, not why didn’t.

      Judy,
As well he should be. He was the Best horse in the race. As I said before, we cannot see the views that the stewards had so can’t make a judgment. I have my thoughts about why so many trainers came out on the side of the stewards. Those guys are not dummies.

Read today that Max is next going in the Haskell on July 20th. Hope he gets a good rest and comes back strong. He ran like the wind in the Derby. Love him.

Country House has developed a cough and won’t be going in the Preakness. Hope he’s OK too and all of them as well. Love and Hugs, JB

Take a look at this video from NBC Sports. You have to scroll down a bit. Looks to me like Gaffalione on War was all over Max’s back legs way before Max moved to the right. What was Gaff thinking. That’s a real shame; bad riding. So many horses and riders could have gone down. Thank God that didn’t happen. No wonder Max came back with cuts on his legs. Ann,
Thank you for the post. Very interesting. I would love to hear what Gary Stevens has to say about the race. Since he is retired, he can say what he truly feels without worrying about what trainers, owners or stewards think.

I don’t know if the age of the jockeys played into it or not. It does seem that the Ortiz brothers are pretty young and take care of the horses and themselves. Same with “our” Mike.

Thanks for posting this. I have avoided news outlets because just too hard at this point. This was a great article though. He made so many great points, speaking basically fact without opinion. It has been so painful because I can no longer deny that it is the horses themselves who pay the ultimate price.

      Judy,
Thanks for the post. Steve always says it right. I do have to agree with Mr. West that it does kind of look as if WOW tried to squeeze through a hole that was too little for him. But who knows, there are so many different views of the race. Just hope both horses go on to have happy, healthy and successful careers. I’m still waiting for Omaha Beach to come back on the scene.

I have watched replays and read comments over and over again. It was and will continue to be a heartbreaking decision for all parties. Every time I watch a replay I think “if only Maximum Security had stayed in his lane”.

If Only. Those words will haunt everybody forever.

Every time I watch another replay I am more grateful that an accident did not happen. We will have the opportunity and pleasure to watch these horses and jockeys compete again. That is what I believe is the most important.

This filly looks way too thin-even though she is a 2 year old in training. Shouldn’t be seeing a ridge on her spine. Doesn’t make me happy at all.
And, did Zenyatta have a foal this year-2020. I know she lost one last year but thought they bred her back.?
