Thanks Trina – A home run again for Diana – and Happiest of Birthday rides for you today!!!
Sad news about Hot Dixie Chick’s baby. Is this her first foal? I saw her last September when I saw Rachel. I wasn’t sure and didn’t think to ask.
Everyone stay hydrated and cool if you are living in the hot part of this nation. 4 leggers too.
Blessings to all.

I think Hot Dixie Chick lost her 2013 foal. Isn’t she the dam of Taco’s friend Chili?
Delrene in Carlsbad, Ca
I went to Stonestreet Facebook page and did not see anything about HDC loss of foal. Could you please direct me to an article or where to read about the loss of her foal? Thank you.
We realize how fragile under the best of circumstances so thank you Lane’s End over and over about the care for your mares and babies.

Hi DeIrene….I saw the news about HDC’s Street Cry colt…trying to remember if I saw it first on drf tweet or one of the forum threads…
Janet Newman
copied the comment from this page. There was another that said My Miss Storm Cat, the dam of My Miss Aurelia also died from foaling complications and I confirmed that on a pedigree query. Her foal is alive.
Did anyone know that Hot Dixie Chick’s 2013 Street Cry colt died? I was just looking at the Jockey Club website, and it said horse was reported dead before registration.

Happy Birthday, Diana! I hope all went well with your horseback riding. I can’t wait to hear all about it, dear friend!
I hate to hear about Hot Dixie Chick’s foal. I remember meeting her when I went to Stonestreet when Rachel was pregnant with Taco. The people at the farm said that HDC and RA were BFFs, just like Zenny and Tasty and I thought that was so sweet. Z makes everything look so easy, it’s easy to forget that so much can go wrong. Thank God that Z and Z13 are so healthy.

Oh, Janet, how awful. Just a horror. I do pray that it was not set deliberately. It’s bad enough as it is. One would think there would be a night watchman. Maybe someone carelessly smoking, which is against all the rules.

SO sad! This is just heartbreaking — tragic loss of these innocent lives and how terrifying for them. Bless them all and may they rest in peace. Things like this should never happen, alas. Condolences to those who loved them. So sorry.

So sorry for Hovis and all of his family. Of course, his poem brought the tears. At least Hot Stepper did not suffer. It hurts us all so badly to lose these dearly loved ones who have been, in many cases, much better friends than any of the humans we know. They never care if we are fat or thin, old or young rich or poor, they just return our love.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
This is so sad, but Hovis has written yet another wonderful tribute to his friend. He mentions “Fit Mare” who was his beloved (at least in his imagination), and many of his early diary entries are about her. Condolences to Hot Stepper’s Mum and all of his connections and, of course, to our dear Hovis.

This brought me to tears. Such a beautiful poem is a wonderful tribute to his friend.

OMG….he must have shattered his whole lower leg….read they used 17 screws and plates and bone grafts…amazing the advances in medicine…PUStNic
casey
No not really. Because they weigh so much the plates and pins must be good and strong and in there so they don’t shift. We did a repair on a filly last week- she had carpus valgus (hopefully you can see this https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153237350790001&set=a.10152769302310001.965259.804730000&type=1&theater )
We had to break the leg above the knee, cut a wedge of bone out, than plate and screw it in. I took radiographs on Wednesday and it looked good. My point is that there were at least 20 screws for that repair, and it was a surgically created break, which will heal faster than an accidental break.
Max
Carol. Weeks of stalking has finally paid off. Saw Cigar running across his paddock. Really quite thrilling.

Fire Destroys Dogwood Stable Barn in Aiken
By Claire Novak, The Blood-Horse Updated: Tuesday, July 23, 2013 1:43 PM
Horses belonging to Dogwood Stable and Legacy Stable survived a large fire at the Aiken Training Track in Aiken, S.C., Dogwood’s Jack Sadler confirmed July 20.
The blaze destroyed a large part of the barn that housed 21 Thoroughbreds—a mixture of 2-year-olds and yearlings—along with a few Quarter Horses and a stable pony. None of the horses were injured and no people were injured by the flames, although worker Victor Sambrano was hospitalized for precautionary measures due to shortness of breath associated with asthma and possible smoke inhalation.

19 Horses Die in Louisiana Barn Fire
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Friday, August 2, 2013 1:23 PM
A fire at a small training center close to Harrah’s Louisiana Downs in Bossier City Aug. 1 has destroyed at least one barn and reportedly killed 19 horses.
The Shreveport Times reported 19 horses were killed in the blaze at the barn at River Point Stables, also known as Wraparound. The newspaper said the facility is owned by Alan Fox.
One adjacent barn which stables horses trained by Cecil Borel caught fire but the blaze was quickly extinguished, said trainer Dan White.

Two Large Barn Fires in Less Than a Week Spark a Warning From Firefighters
News Release Issued: 31 July 2013 For immediate release
Firefighters have urged farmers to be vigilant during the hot weather after responding to two large barn fires in less than a week.
Fire crews are carrying out periodic inspections in the aftermath of a large barn fire in Oaks in Charnwood during the early hours of Tuesday (30/7/13) morning. This follows a similar incident, only three days earlier on Saturday (27/7/13) morning, where firefighters tackled a blaze at a farm in Diseworth involving more than 25,000 tonnes of hay.

Question
How I can make my barn safer in regards to fire?
This is definitely a topic that all barn owners, boarders, and horse lovers should be aware of. Horse barn fires can have lot of sources – human and otherwise, and therefore the list of things to look out for is LONG… but let’s tackle it.

Sheena. Nick is amazing to have progressed this far. He seems to have lost some weight, but he looks really fit and his disposition is incredible for all that he has endured. I thought that the hospital appeared to be first class and the Irish doctor in charge really knew how to explain a complex procedure in clear terms. Very impressive. It was great of Coolmore to do this for their fans.
