Zilkha

Happy Birthday Zilkha!

Zilkha at Santa Anita Park. Photo by John Shirreffs.

Today is Zilkha’s “official” birthday and she is beginning her new year in John Shirreffs’s barn as she moves from the Mayberry’s farm into the next phase of her life. Welcomed and already adored by John, Mario and Carmen who were also her Mama’s trainer, groom and hot walker.  In John’s words “She is a perfect height, well proportioned and extremely athletic” May all the stars align for her and that she enjoys many celebrations!!!

YAY! Finally my computer is no longer on strike and I too was able to see Zilka’s video as well as all the other cool things I’ve missed out on for the last few weeks.

You don’t see it here, but Maggie’s horseback interview started with her
reaching over to give Jackie’s Warrior congratulatory strokes on his neck. I don’t know if she was riding her pony, but he was feeling his oats — she is quite the rider because he was really bouncing up and down like a hyper rocking horse! That was probably her Zander though.
      Cheers!

          Dear Ann and Judy,
I hope Echo Zulu is okay, too. Glad that Joel sensed that something wasn’t quite right with her. Better to be safe than sorry.
I felt so bad for Letruska — that was some speed duel the Ortiz brothers conducted. Letruska looked so dejected and tired at the back of the group. 😟
It wasn’t to be for Rich Strike, alas. They wanted him out in the clear, and he clearly wanted to go to the rail. I felt almost as bad for him and Sonny as I did when Smarty Jones lost at Belmont. I still think he is a phenomenal horse!
          Oh well, onward we go❣️
Hope those of you (the majority, I think) who love hot weather will be ecstatic this week! As for me, I will be basking in the air-conditioning and longing for fall/winter. ☀️ 🥵 ☀️

    Greetings!
I missed the Belmont as I was at the dog show. And, wow, what a weekend of shows it was for me! Little Rosey showed very well on Thursday, and I was pleased. But what floored me was when the judge pointed to her for BEST OF BREED!!! There were lots of dogs in the class, nearly all professionally handled, all very well trained and experienced show dogs. Rosey is a baby, 13 months old! Handlers are all very composed, show no emotion in the ring. But I picked Rosey up and gave her a big hug, and ran to the Best of Breed marker, in tears! She defeated the #1 male in the country (ranks given according to wins, nation wide) and the #1 female in the country! I was over the moon! Ring time for breed judging was 8 am and the Sporting Group judging (all best of breed winners in the sporting breeds compete against each other) was not until 5:30 that afternoon. It was a hot day, over 100 degrees, but we waited and competed in the group. She did nothing there as her youth really showed. I floated home in cloud 9 and she had steak for dinner! On Friday her brother Jager was there and HE won best of breed, over the same entry, and Rosey was Best Opposite Sex to Best of Breed! So they both defeated the top dogs in the country!!! Wow, was I a proud breeder that day, grinning from ear to ear! Saturday Rosey had had enough of this show stuff, did not show well and got nothing. But Jager won Best Opposite. Sunday, Rosey was a bit better, but nothing, Jager won “Select” Dog which really means the judge loved him but just not enough for the breed win. All in all, Rosey got 10 Grand Champion points (25 points needed to earn Grand Championship) and Jager got 15! Pretty darned good weekend for my babies!!!!

Terrible luck for Frankie D and Lord North in the Prince of Wales At Ascot today.

Lord North enters the gate blindfolded (guess he won’t go in without it). Frankie tried numerous times to remove it, but it was stuck in the bridle. Finally he got it off, but after the gates opened. They missed the break and finished last😞.

They were my pick in the cappin’ contest🤪. Glad they got through the race unscathed. Love and Hugs, JB

Another documovie I highly recommend is Harry and Snowman. It’s about Harry DeLeyer, an immigrant from Holland, and an Amish work horse on his way to slaughter. Harry bought him at the Holland Auction in PA for $80 from the kill man right off his truck. They went on to win multiple championships in the highest echelon of show jumping beginning in 1958. But that’s only part of the story; Harry and Snowman were best friends.

It’s streaming on Roku and Pluto too I think. Love and Hugs, JB

          Dear Judy,
Yes indeed, I would like to see Harry and Snowman! I have read “The Eighty Dollar Champion” by Elizabeth Letts — I treasure my paperback copy.
Thanks for the heads-up! I haven’t ventured into streaming as yet though.
          Hugs and Love 🐎

          Dear Marshall:

There are excerpts from that book in the film.

What a strong bond Harry and Snowman had. I do believe Snowman knew that Harry saved his life. Love and Hugs, JB

          Dear Judy,
Yes, I believe Snowman recognized something special in Harry that night at the truck (at the lot), and Harry felt there was something very special in Snowman, too. Snowy knew that Harry saved him and gave him his all.
          Hugs and Love 💕

    RIP Hollywood Story
She was by Wild Rush out of Wife for Life (Dynaformer) and the dam of Honor A P. She died of natural causes at age 21. 🌈
Hollywood Story was winner of several stakes races and was trained by our John Shirreffs. She won a lot of races at Hollywood Park. Owned by Mr. Krikorian(Starrwood Stables), she died peacefully at home. Condolences to all her connections. Run free with heaven’s angel band, dear girl. 🌸
I tried to view the article on The Bloodhorse but was unable to pull it up — I kept getting messages that an “error occurred”. Guess I’m personna non grata with Bloodhorse tonight.
    Hugs and Love

I remember hearing John talk about Hollywood Story when Honor A P was in his running days. Very sad, but it sounds like she had a nice life. Best wishes to my Frosted Oats who will be trying again to get a win tomorrow at Belmont! 🙏🏻🤞❤️
